Apple Tree pests (forum)

Hi, The other day I noticed that my trusty old Apple tree has a whole lot of what I would guess to be borer marks most frequently around the nodes. From my pics can any one confirm that this is my problem? Thanks

It doesn't look good does it Freuds Cat? Could be a canker also (or even galls) Might be time to get it grafted - if it's a special favourite.
You might want to get a tree Dr or such in - for a proper diagnosis..

Anyway Freuds Cat here are some useful links and possible treatment options that may assist you.
It could very well be woolly aphid - as galls are caused by "some" insect laying eggs under the bark :) (so I didn't disagree there...?)
But Apple canker (Nectria) can also cause closed "galls"...but it is a fungus..
The point I make, I guess, is to be aware that there will be very different treatment regimes for a fungus vs an insect and vs a bacterial infection...
So if one doesn't work try another...(unless you want a qualified person to take care of the diagnosis and treatment, of course...which is your choice to make :)
Maybe this one is now past it's productive years? That's why I suggested a back up or a graft - depending on how old it is...?
Good luck :)

European canker of apples and pears is not present in Australia. It was eradicated 20 years ago.

Thanks for your response. The tree is about 12 years old. The fruit is exceptional and plentiful and also provides shade to a special place in the garden. So I'm keen to keep it in place.
I have to say I'm not quite sure what the story with this thread is. Who is John and why are people talking to him when he is not even posting here? Makes for a weird read.

Does anyone know if this is a fungus or a woolly aphid infestation?

I'm fairly sure you have Woolly Aphids - the picture is similar what I have seen on my trees.
Watch this video to get rid of them.
http://www.abc.net.au/local/videos/2011/04/28/3202377.htm
The insecticides she recommends are Lebaycid and Baythroid, and also using lime suplhur after winter pruning.

You guys are right; my tree is definitely infected with Woolly Aphids.
I spoke to someone today from the nursery where bought my tree from and I was told they had an infestation last season.
I found the video, posted by wazzamcg, very informative. I will pick up a bottle of Lebaycid tomorrow and hopefully, I should be able to get it under control.
Thanks!

Lebaycid is overkill. Not sure it is even suitable for woolly aphid. APVMA review has banned use on food producing plants/trees.
Peter Cundall recommends painting them with metho
