They look like scale to me, beginnergirl. Scraping them off may be the simplest way since your plant is small. Or try some home made white oil: 500ml of water to 5ml (1 teaspoon) of vegetable oil and a drop of dishwashing detergent, shake and spray all over or dunk a toothbrush in it and scrub the bugs off. The other thing you might want to do is water the plant well, even put the whole pot in water to do so.

there's no way to get between the seed without breaking it. I'm just gonna have to throw them out.

Are you sure its scale ?? Looks unusual, is it also possible its root nodules, seems like your plant is sprouting in water, and there seems to be white roots coming out of some larger similar things in the pic. Scale should come off pretty easily, and there may be eggs or larvae under some of them.

To me they look too woody to be scale insects.. I agree with JakfruitEt... I think they are part of the stem, root nodules seem probable. You see similar nodules on some varieties, especially the younger growth.

Sorry I didn't see that it was not potted up yet; the stem was so thick already. The guys are right; they may be growth buds. Hope you have not thrown them out.

I agree, looks like normal behaviour for a tree growing in water :. You don't need to do that by the way, it's more a school project to how how seeds germinate than anything else. They are happier straight in the dirt.
