The leaves on my Bababo are turning yellow. There are three fruit on it, about 15cm long that are about a quarter yellow, the rest green. the tree is about 120cm high and has been in the ground for about a year. It gets fruit tree fertiliser and potash. Any ideas on why the leaves (although there aren't that many on it at the moment) are yellow?

This happened to mine because I over watered it. The leaves turned yellow and then they all dropped off. So I repotted it and noticed that the roots had a white fungus on it.

Make sure you have really good drainage. It is going much better now.

Ok, I will water it less. It is in the ground. I have a cutting I took off of it which is in a pot, and that looks fine. I will check the drainage too. Thanks!

SHOULD I RE-POT?...
Some leaves on my Babaco are turning yellow. It starts from the veins and moves out to the edges and the leaf dies. Iv'e lost two leaves from the bottom of the plant and the third one will fall soon.
Also there has been very little growth since this started (about a month ago).
There a about 10 small fruit on it.
Should I re-pot or is this a normal occurance with babaco?

Hi Charles. The leaves have gotten worse since the last time I checked. I pulled the plant out of the pot and it doesn't look like there is any water damage. the pot has good drainage and the soil was on the dry side of moist.

I've attached pictures including a picture of the larger of the fruit and a 50 cent for comparison.

ok i know nothing about Babaco but to me it shouldnt have that many fruit if any at that size and in such a small pot.
I wouldnt be at all suprised if the plant is putting all its neutrients (pot and leaves etc) into the fruit and suffering greatly in the process.

As I said I dont know the plant at all but if it where mine I wouldnt be letting it set many if any fruit until it was bugger and in a bigger pot/ground.

Double the pot size, maybea black plastic one to heat up the soil faster, and more mulch on top. Then I would wait for it to be a bit bigger and once the fruit set feed it specifically for growing those fruit.

Any experts here want to comment ??

Hi John,
I have 3 babaco and they are all in 55 cm pots . In the attached picture the one in the orange pot was less than a metre tall but had so many fruits on it. All up it had 12 and still more are growing so i wouldn't worry about changing pot size . The yellowing of the leaves is very common in babaco and paw paw plants. It will always happen to the bigger bottom leaves. I just simply cut mine off and the new leaves growing at the top will just replace it.

At first you might get some fruit drop and if that happens just put it into a more sunnier spot and increase the water regime. The other two babaco in the black pots are almost 2 metres tall and are continually in fruit. Pictures of the latest fruits attached.

Thanks Charles and Michael. I'm now thinking maybe it it is a nutritional deficiency. Michael, how often to you feed your plants and what do you use? Also how often do you water them?

Hi John,
I only apply some cow manure at the start and water it weekly. I also feed it with seasol every fortnight.

Thanks Michael, it sounds like I'm not doing much different from you. I guess I'll just have to wait and see how they go.
