Bird bath

Not exactly a fruit tree problem, but I wondered if any of the smart people here could help.

I have always wanted a bird bath to attract birds, as they are such good insect eaters.I finally bought a beautiful ceramic bird bath in a pretty shade of turquoise blue. Not a single bird visited it. I found out that birds don't like blue!

Has anyone any ideas about how to change the colour - just the inside of the bowl? I thought of painting it, but their feet and claws would probably scratch it off. Help please!

Go to the "commercial section" of Bunnings Warehouse (not a normal bunnings) and they will stock Crommelins products. They specialise in evry possible kind of coating fro concrete, I'm pretty sure there is a black fishpond paint.

Thanks Jimmy, I'll look into it. Still wonder if it would get scratched off though - the surface is quite smooth.

HI Julie, to really make it stick you would probably have to score the surface and roughen it up(like when you paint over gloss paint)which you might find unpleasant to do seeing as you liked it how it was. Good luck, it will be worth it for the birds.

Hi,

Will paint (even pond paint) leach into the water for a while (similar to ponds newly made of concrete, which can't get fish put in them for ages). Birds won't like that. What about trying out something like a piece of black pond liner, or another bowl of a different colour on the bird bath, and see if that helps before you decide to paint?

Diana.

Good idea Diana. I might try a piece of heavy duty black plastic first. That would easily be replaced if it gets scratched.
Though it is quite tough - I covered an old plastic garden table with builder's plastic, to use as a potting bench. It has survived an awful lot of work overthe years.
