Cardoon (forum)

Anyone else growing Cardoon? It's a relative of Artichoke but grown mainly for the edible stems which are rather like celery in cooking. I like them very much as do others I have given stems to.
The plant is very strong and produces lots of stems - so many that I have been cutting them back as mulch.
Faster growing than celery. They do have a few prickles but if handled daintily these aren't a problem to wipe off before cooking. It's a Bi-annual or even a Perennial in some areas.
One of mine has just started blooming so I may have spare seed down the track if anyone would like to try some.

Hi Lissa, I grow cardoon, would love to know how you prepare them as when I tried them they wee incredibly bitter. Mine flower and set seed every year and self seed gently around the garden, there's always a list of people wanting them as they have such attractive foliage.
