citrus graft sap??? (forum)

My potted nagami kumquat which was bought 3 years ago is showing sap around the old graft site. Is this perhaps simply due to the trunk growing?

It is otherwise reasonably healthy, some leafminer, and yellowing of leaves but nothing I worry about. I'm keeping up the water as its developing fruit at the moment. Anyone ever seen this?

Hi Brad, I'm thinking this could be Phytophthora foot rot or 'gummosis', which is caused by fungal-like organisms.

You can control it by improving drainage, and spraying the tree with a fungicide.

"Excess soil moisture favors production and spread of zoospores. Therefore, increased drainage and careful irrigation is an important factor in disease management."

So always water your tree in the mornings so that the plant is dry by evening, and be careful not to over-water, and spray according to directions with an organic fungicide such as Lime Sulphur or Eco-carb. Get a fungicide NOT tested on animals.

Good luck!

Oh, and if the tree was bought 3 years ago and is still in the same pot, it needs re-potting. New, fresh potting soil, even a bigger pot if possible. Weak malnourished trees are more susceptible to disease.

Cheers!

We are getting a citrus flush at the moment so I would agree with Brad that it is a weak graft leaking sap.
You could fungicide it just in case but the bark around the area looks healthy.

Sometimes graft incompatibilty due to the exocortis virus is the cause.

Thanks all.
VC - I don't think its Phytophthora. Symptoms from WA Ag Dept Citrus Disease page don't match.

Jimmy - I'd never heard of exocortis. A quick google brought up mainly academic papers. A skim read suggested that the virus presents in under 2 years, which if ALWAYS true, means this is probably something else. I've had healthy fruit, and the small green kumquats growing at the moment look perfect.

Google found me extravasated sap and its causes. But no pictures

Maybe a little sulfur now because it won't hurt. I intend to repot (back in the same pot as it was a valentine gift - gush) before spring, which should be ok as the drainage is good and there's no over compaction of the mix. In the meantime I'll keep an eye out for any other symptoms and properly read about this virus and its treatment.

good question Amanda. Although its on the trunk, its like the green wood you get on a young branch before it hardens up brown. Another reason why I wondered whether it was a growth related event
