Hi Two Chooks,
I've never heard of a dwarf pineapple but down here in cold Melbourne I'm growing an ordinary pineapple outdoors. It began with the top of a pineapple from the supermarket.

I have a few small growing pineapples and have even registered a hybrid between the 2 from seedlings 1 grew .
Ananas 'chocolat' is a cultivar of what used to be called Ananas lucidus .
A recent revision has changed all names .
The tiny little white fruited Ananas comosus var. ananassoides [ was A. nanus ]
Many of my plants have flowers coming now.
A. Chocolat is a spineless plant .

The pygmy pineapple I am growing is currently having a flower. I would like to know if the fruit are edible, its Ananas nana. From what I've read it seems to be only grown as an ornamental. Is there any miniature pineapple that produces a good fruit for eating? Thanks.

Hi Linton
The fruit of the pygmy pineapple is unpalatable because of its acidity as oppose to inedible because inedible could also mean poisonous which the dwarf ornamental nana is not.
So to make it more palatable you can macerate the fruit with passion fruit liqueur and sugar or eat some miracle fruit to mask the tartness of the fruit.
Yes there is a dwarf pineapple variety that is more palatable than the pygmy pineapple the dwarf pineapple ananas cosmosus.
Happy Gardening :-)
