garlic? (forum)

Can any warm climate garlic growers advise me the following.

I believe garlic likes to be kept moist. I believe it should be pulled up when the leaves yellow down (about a third?).

What I'm curious about is whether I should keep putting water on my garlic now that perth is warming up and getting less rain, or say they're pretty large and green and leave it to dry up a bit???

Hi Brad. I am still watering my garlic. I wait until I see signs of leaf yellowing before I pull back on the water. This seems to work each year.

Have a gentle little dig around one and see how well developed they are. Can you see the shape of the separate bulbs? That should give you an idea how far along they are.

Be sure to dry them really well in the shade. I have had garlic go mouldy on me when it wasn't dried enough. I peg mine up on my undercover washing line.

thanks julie. good idea to take a look at a bulb/cloves and see.

I noticed a couple of extras that were planted separately and aren't as sheltered yellowing up, so they'll come up soon and make sure to dry them properly

Brad, I meant to say cloves, not bulbs! Having written that yesterday,I had a poke around mine today. I have normal garlic, and large ones given to me by a friend. Neither of them seems to be fully developed yet, so I'll just keep up with the water.
