Homemade Graft Sealant? (forum)

I've just finished my first ever graft (on an avocado seedling) and though I've used grafting tape to cover up the union, the general opinion seems to be to use something to completely seal it. Is there anything cheap and available that can be used for this? I've read that some people use stuff like vasoline and modelling clay. :)

Plastic paint from a tool shop or hardware?
Its some type of poly vinal that you dip tool handles into to give them a soft plastic coating for a handle.
Its used cold but it aint cheap cheap. Thats the closest I know to some of the commercial jobbies ive seen around.
Not used it mind you but I will be soon

Thanks M Nash, I just remembered that I have droughtshield, a type of anti-dessicant! Do you think that would do the trick?

Hi Nick T, I use a product called Tree Stac. Comes in small tub, not expensive and lasts a long time :-)

I wouldn't use vasoline.

Thanks Brendan, do you think you could buy it at, say, Bunnings or Mitre 10?

Nick I recently gave away a tub of grafting wax because I hardly used it.Bunnings doesn't seem to have it and I got it from an irrigation and watertank shop.Steriprune is good enough to use for that purpose along with grafting tape and both are at bunning.I took a picture on the weekend.

Hi Nick, I bought my Tree Stac from Porters in Mackay, it's a hardware store & nursery.
That Steriprune Mike mentions is also a good product.
Mike, the garden guru says never buy mancozeb, always buy 'mancozeb plus'?

Thought that those interested in grafting might like to read this article out of interest http://rfcarchives.org.au/Next/CaringForTrees/DelayedIncompat119-2-01.htm (if you haven't already seen it). Can also access many things of interest from index on the left that's displayed.

Grafting tape is fine Nick. For the scion I completely wrap it in glad wrap to prevent moisture loss. A plastic bag will also do the same job. Some propagators completely wrap the scion with the same grafting tape. The point being to stop the scion losing moisture till it takes.
I did a Secondo avo last summer which has taken and now has some nice healthy growth. Don't forget to spray your new avo with anti rot every month, I don't know how many avocado trees I've lost over the years because of root rot.

I find that plumbers teflon thread tape is very good at sealing grafts or buds.
cheap too.
if I want to protect the scion from drying out, I often use a small ziplock bag to cover it and do it up in a way that allows condensation to drain away.
If in sun I also cover with a paper bag for a while.
Debladed petioles left on the scion are a good idea to allow you to guage how its doing.
if they drop off things are ok, if the petioles hang on, then the graft may be failing to take.
