Diana says... Hi Tanya, Yes, this is a common weed in Brisbane. One seed will cause death: "Castor beans affect all animals and humans. Even one of them may be sufficient to cause death. They contain some of the strongest toxins of our planet’s flora: the alkaloid ricinin and the toxalbumin ricin, the latter being a plant lectin, or protein, more toxic even than strychnos and cyanides. What is more, it has the ability to accumulate in the organism until the lethal dose is reached. The symptoms then are nausea and vomiting, stomachache, bloody diarrhea, headache, cold sweat, sleepiness, disorientation, fever, shortage of breath, seizures, followed by a collapse and death." http://library.thinkquest.org/C007974/1_3cas.htm) | About the Author Diana Brisbane 17th November 2009 10:25am #UserID: 0 |

Speedy says... Nothing to get too worried about, just dont eat the seeds, or any other part of the plant. It doesn't taste any good anyway! Its ok to occupy a spot for a while ,until you're ready to plant something else there. Then slash it down for mulch or compost. If your worried about seeds, you can knock the flowers off before they get a chance to set. The seeds do resemble dry edible beans with pretty markings, that can be dangerous to the young or ignorant. There is an attractive red-leafed variety of this plant that you may see occasionally. A fast growing plant. | About the Author Speedy Nth Vic. 18th November 2009 12:41am #UserID: 0 |
