lemon tree sap issue (forum)

this problem occured a couple or so months ago initially at that time like now it involved about 1/3 of the trunk surface. the old damage seems to have settled and no further damage occured no bark falling off etc.,.

this time again about 1/3 new undamged trunk area affected some of the sap visibly coming out of small crack about 1" or so long, some just appears. forgot to say it is about 4"s above ground level and no mulch near it what can be seen is loose rubble like leaves.

the tree is a 4year old seedling about 4 meters high with some good fruit on it and by all appearances as healthy as any other citrus we have but the only one affected, it is in a drier part of the garden and to date has done well on rainfall alone, the last time it was mulched was between 12 and 24 months ago.

we would hate to lose the tree as its main purpose is shade, all and any help much appreciated.

Hi len,
First off, I'd remove that 'loose rubble' from around the tree trunk. Best to have bare earth around a lemon tree, say 200mm between trunk and mulch.

Give your tree some Sulphate of Potash, that will 'harden up' the tree tissue. Say a handful to the sq metre over the mulch, out to and past the dripline.

Then mix up 30g copperoxy chloride, 30g Mancozeb Plus, 4

thanks brendan,

the soils around the base is very dry so the rubble is not holding in moisture by appearance.

if there is no treatment outside of chemical we try to run organic at all times, then we will have to do as you suggest. yes it could do with a trim off the top. it's not near our vege' garden and away from other fruit trees by about 3 meters.

will pull ack the rubble it is self generating.

g'day brendan,

thanks for help here is update which may help another?

ok now sap has well and truely by appearance stopped took about 4 or 5 applications, did another today along the more the merrier lines.

the tree grew as a double trunk from very young seedling maybe i should have trimmed of the at the time secondary trunk off, so the issue though it affected pretty much the whole trunk below the junction it was only one side that was suffering that is 1/2 the tree as such.

it is wanting to bud new leaves and has some flowers. i am soaking organic extra to give it a feed with, all i have at present, so hoping now we have a handle on the tree and have saved it.

so many thanks hey

len
