They start off green and then turn to dark purple when fully ripe. Tree is loaded with fruit. Thanks for any help.

It could be a lamb hass, these varieties tend to get purple skins.

Looks like a 'seed-grown' avo HollyH, probably from a Pinkerton avo? (the odd shape top looks a bit like a Pinkerton) It's not a Lamb Hass. (see pic of Lamb Hass).
As long as it tastes good, doesn't really matter :-)

HollyH - Try crushing leaves of your Avo and see if it gives off an Aniseed scent? If so comes from Mexican Heritage such as Bacon Variety which is cold tolerant to Minus 2C or more as long as its not at that for 8hrs but say an hour or two after Dawn

This is a normal "West Indian" Avocado. Theory are actually native to coastal Mexico. I've seen them growing all around Veracruz pretty much right on the beach. They are quite different to the Avocados that grow up at 2000 meters + altitude. Nearly all the commercial varieties are from Altitude as that race has more oil.

These ones from the coast don't care much about salt.
