Gday, can anyone help me find different mango trees in the perth area.dont have trouble finding K.Pride ,R2E2 Allison,Ono,Sensation. Here is a list of varieties I would love to get hold of Alphonse,Kwan,Florigon,Valencia Pride,Artulfo and Keitt.I think these ones would do ok in perth?Dont think our quarantine allows us to bring them from interstate, not from Daleys anyway.Any help or advice would be much appreciated. Thanks Bill

Thanks Tommoz.ill check him out,hes not far from me.i see that Dawsons sell King Thai (aka Maha Chinook)and going by this forum sounds like a winner.Only problem that it could be an early variety and it is recommended Perth growers plant mid season varieties so its not too cold at flowering.Worth a try I reckon, beggers cant be choosers haha.I planted a Honey Gold seed about 4 months ago and have a seedling 300mm high.Pretty happy with that. Thanks for the help Tommoz, happy gardening. Bill

Hi Bill
I planted a couple Honey Golds and got 4 embryos from each - I potted up the strongest and the second strongest but discarded the 2 weedy slow growing ones and wondered why you only got one from a seed of Honey Gold as is a polyembryonic seed like KP? Im going to plant out mine in spring and wondered which of the 2 is true to its parent? the strongest or 2nd strongest grower? both look pretty good - seed was planted without outer shell 7/1/14

Gday Mark,i also planted my seed without outer shell and got 2 seedlings.i pinched out the weaker of the 2.I searched here for `mango grown by seed` or just `Honey Gold`,cant quite remember, but it said that they are indeed polyembryonic and the stronger of the 2 should grow true to type.Im working away at the moment but when I last saw it 3 weeks ago my seedling was a little bigger than your small one.Hoping when I see it next week its put on a bit more growth, but it`ll be getting pretty cold in Perth now.I`ll be interested to see how you go.Mark,i just went and looked at your My Edibles and see you already have had some success growing mangos in Melbourne, well done.In there Lorraine2 said Wandilla in Perth has Banana Ken which sound very nice. Thanks Lorraine.Did you get your Nam Doc Mai?Please keep us all updated as im sure a lot of southerners want a decent mango or 2

Its as cold there in Perth as here in Melb only 2deg lower.
They are growing Honey Gold commercially in Mildura with frost fans or some anti frost devices so if you have a good Nth facing wall or a thick concrete drive to create a heat soak plant there.
My Nam Doc Mai i got b4 Xmas didnt put out much growth as wanted to see if the flowers it had would pollinate and they did and have 1 mango out of 3 left and plant looks quite cold tolerant.
Will put up some pics of my 2 KP mangoes also as was too dark when I got home tonight. My Palmer is showing good cold tolerance already and my Bowen seedling is already showing cold burn on latest growth as expected -will put some pics up tommorrow - Ive also worked out that because I live on quite a busy road the cars and trucks wizzing past act like anti frost fans in the morning stopping frost from settling for free - Mark

yeah,i have a sheltered spot next to a concrete driveway in my back yard that should do the trick.Thats lucky, free frost protectionI`m going to loose internet for a couple days as I`m on a ship heading out to sea,but am looking forward to seeing your photos when we return. How do Nam Doc Mais taste? You cant always trust what nursery-men write about their own products. They look a lot like the mangoes I`ve eaten in the Philippines which are delicious.Ive heard of orchardist turning on the overhead sprinklers to stop frost in N.Zealand.Didnt make sense to me but apparently it works. Not sure yet but don't think that would be a good idea for mangoes.More study required.Bill

Bill - Ive never had a bad mango - Nam docs https://www.buyfruit.com.au/nam-doc-mai-mangos (or banana mango)are pretty good either green dipped in soy or fish sauce as well as ripe and very fibre free - get from asian grocers in your Vietnamese precinct - Lychees also grow well around Perth too
