Hi all,

I'm wondering if anyone has this plant or knows where to get it. Although not commonly eaten, we used to garnish our salads with petals of the flowers in Cuba. They also have a alot of sweet nectar which kids like. I have been searching but havent had much luck here

Is that the same as a Poinciana? Looks very similar leaf-wise. They are a common street tree around here, large brown pods follow the flowers.

It's a very common plant here - (Caesalpinia) there is even a yellow flowered one in town. Bunnings get's them in sometimes too. I have one grown from street collected seed - but it hasn't produced any seed pods yet. It's very tough.
If you can't source it locally Laisla - I am due to grab some bauhinia seeds for another forum member - so I could see if there are any of these around too...let me know.

Dunno about the flowers, but chewing on a branch almost killed my dog many years ago. It blew over from next door one night, and next day she nearly died. Luckily the vet was able to save her.

Yes further research indicates Poinciana is Delonix regia (Madagascar) and the Pride of Barbados Laisla is looking for is Caesalpinia pulcherrima (Caribbean) and more of a shrub like plant with medicinal/edible properties.

LOL - I talk to mine all the time SG :) It has been proven that plants that get talked to are healthier - not cos of the chatter tho' - it's the attention they get...people who are spending enough time in their garden to talk to their plants - are generally loving them pretty well... ;-)
I am usually growling at mine...?

I would be very surprised if anyone ever showed plants respond to music especially slim dusty or chamber music.I suppose the seedling go more for justin beiber.I think my vegies would be meatloaf fans.
Plants do talk to each other over long distances through phyto-aerosols.It helps them coordinate flowering. They can even be aggressive to each other through allelopathic root interactions.

You bet it is rude and plants act like animals at night. If plants didn't defend themselves with chemical warfare we wouldn't have caffeine in coffee beans, many drugs, hot chilis, most herbs and many spices. They are much more active than they are often given credit for.

Sounds good SG!? I always appreciated Speedy's comment about soil fungi and their "network" - they acutally invented their own "internet" all by themselves - long, long b4 we did .. :)

As for obnoxious, rude and repellant chemicals etc..I have one word only and it begins with a k .... :))
