It is going to be a great season for Mangosteen this year . Mature trees along a mates driveway are covered in small fruits . It will be a few months before they are ready , they need the summer rains to fill out and ripen the fruit . The long dry season helps the tree flower well .

Hi Achacha,

By Taringa fruit shop, do you mean Naturally Fruit, which is quite a fancy fruit shop at Gailey fiveways, at the corner of Indooroopilly Rd, Gailey Rd and Swann Rd? I can't think of any other fruit shops in Taringa. It's quite close to me. I went there yesterday and they didn't look like they had any.

Thanks,

Diana.

Hi ,
Some Achacha fruits can be quite sour. Make sure you have tried the sweet/tangy ones to really appreciate the fruit. Only bad thing is that the seeds is very big so you don't get much meat from the fruit.

Yes, I've seen this before jujube. I spoke to the guy who runs my local nursery recently and he said he knows of several people who have successfully grown the tree, but getting fruit off them seems to be a lottery.

Lucy something doesn't look right with the mangosteen and the trees in those pictures. The foliage, wood and a few ood things make it atypical even though the fruit look very close.I am not sure it is mangosteen.I might have to google G.malaccensis for a stickybeak and it isn't hombriana.

Hi Mike,

I went back and double checked a matured fruit and found the inside of that fruit was definitely not the purple one that we prefer to, so disappointed.

I can tell you that I visited Rocky back in 95 I think. Also saw the article on the purple mangosteen, thanks to the local rare fruit club, which am still a member. Turns out the mangosteen in question was the common yellow mangosteen how this can be mistaken for the purple I don't know. However he took me on a tour of the garden and sure enough had Cocoa and various other rare species on show. Even today I go past the house in question and wonder how things are getting on. Rocky has passed away (I think) and the house sold ,new tenants some time back, the house was his parents home initially. Also saw a shell of the coco de mur, the double shelled coconut from the Seychelles, inside the house on the big sideboard, he was very proud of this.

My purple mangosteen survives here even though I have tried my best to kil it with neglect. 3 winters now and it is still going. It only makes full leaves in summer, the rest of the time its stunted. I really dont take any care of it at all as I keep thinking it will be a wast of time and die on me, but it just keeps going. If someone really tried in a good part of town with a nice micro and good protection from wind especially, then I dont doubt that it could eventually be fruited in Brisbane. I brought mine down from Cairns as a 3-4 year old plant, which would now be 6-7 years old.

A bit late in the day perhaps - but cut around the middle of mangosteen, just through the skin, twist halves in opposite directions, and one half of the skin will just lift off.

Rambutans - similar, but you can just use your fingernail to cut through the skin, pull off the top, and squeeze the fruit straight into your mouth.

I've been to Laos and spent my time with the locals.
