I tasted my first red dragon fruit this morning! Wow, it is certainly sweet & the flesh can only be described as 'fluoro beetroot'!!
The fruit along with numerous D.F cuttings have been brought down from Kalbarri to Karen at Capel Frogsong nursery. The cuttings will be for sale once established as plants.

Yes the red dragonfruit are certainly spectacular in appearance, although someone I gave one to try once said they tasted like "cheap perfume". The yellow, smaller in size, don't have the same musky flavour and are more refreshing to eat. I recently got hold of cuttings of a pink variety so will be anxious to see how they perform in the taste test.

The taste of the red-white and red-red dragonfruit vary quite considerably. I've found the bigger red-reds have little flavour, but at the markets the small red-reds, when left to soften, are delicious. The red-whites are often better when they are larger. I believe this is the self infertile type.
Hopefully I'll drive out and get my pink dragonfruit plant and koubo this weekend!

It would seem that there is a lot of difference in the taste depending on the size of the fruit? Dragonfruit with all its variations would certainly appeal to many gardeners with limited space & time.
Are they allowed into WA from Qld?
