seedless Thai guava (forum)

Hi all,
I need help in obtaining a seedless Thai guava to grow. My mom is in love with it. We were in the market in Pattaya, Thailand in 2005 and found this funny looking shape, elongated green fruit that doesn't looked like a regular guava. The link here is will show the picture of the guava i'm talking about. http://www.fotegrafik.com/search.php?terms=seedless+guava&restrict=rf
It was very nice and actually seedless.
Many thanks,
Trang

Hi,
I am also looking for a Thai Guava Tree. I have not had a seedless guava before. I grew up in Thailand and just love the big thai guava that are white and crunchy. If anyone knows where I can find them please let me know. I check Srisiam but couldn't figure out if I can get if from there. His email does not work either.
Thanks.

Hi Matthew,ahh... trust me, my link shows the seedless guava. I've been to Thailand's Pattaya market, bought a few and they were wonderful, all flesh and no seeds at all! The picture you've shown is known as Mận in Vietnam. I think Daley listed it as WAX JAMBU, Syzygium jambolana. They varied in sizes, sweetness and colours - red, pink, white and pale green are the most common colours. However, thank you for updating. Cheers, Trang

The abone picture is Syzygium samarangense (wax apple) which is seedless and way better than than the other 5 asian Syzigium apples. There are none of the giant sweet ones in Australia. There are poor quality seedless guavas in India and the Caribbean. All thai seedless types are based on the big white fleshed thai guava.A new giant seedless type with smooth skin like a green eggplant is becoming popular in the bangkok markets and it is a real winner.Thailand have listed it a a plant of national agricultural significance with restrictions on the export or propagation material.Taiwan and Malaysia commercially produce thai durian and wax apple and it is to protect thai agricultural development.

Most of the pink types like hong kong pink, chinese pear smell strong and a quite rich.My thai giant is on par with those in the taste department with much larger and less aromatic fruit but more productive trees.Asian people usually eat them crunchy but I prefer when they go soft.

Hi, from Tokyo!
I am growing 5 potted guavas. One of them, psidium guajava variegata, produced 3 delicious fruits this year. I only bought it as a young grafted tree in March this year and it already fruits.
As expected, the fruits had a lot of hard seeds and I am now interested in getting a seedless cultivar or a cultivar with few seeds.

Arun it won't be that easy because the smooth seedless ones have been called a genetic resource of national significance in Thailand and the ttrees are not exported. The old fashioned mis-shapen thai seedless I'm not sure about. The is also a thai purple a bit like the above pictured guava with stronger coloyur going into the flesh but it doesn't taste as good.Maybe you could try on-line from one of the plant distributors especially in Taiwan or China.

I have a Thai seedless guava in a greenhouse in Gainesville, FL. I got it from Excalibur in Lake Worth, FL. It's fairly large and has flowered a few times, but no fruit. Being that it's seedless, pollination should not be an issue. Any ideas?

It could be something to do with temperature. I've been informed that this has more to do with guava yield/ fruit set than anything else. Are the flowers simply not leading to fruit or are they dropping off small or malformed?

The seedlees thai guavas are not heavy producers and are a bit touchy in a few ways. Maybe the thais give a little GA3 encouragement.
Maybe as sternus said temperature or even sunlight is the issue and seedlessness doesn't mean pollination is not required.

This is a pan sithong guava, 800 gram.
I only like this guava because it's sweet and has nice flavour.
Mostly they don't have much flavour.
If you cut it like this then you don't get many seeds to eat.

Most fruit trees and flowering plants relying on potassium for higher fruit yield and more vivid flowers. So u can either give it some potassium sulfate (most Kmarts or garden stores have) or compost loads of banana peels and added to it!! :)

Every now and again a seedless guava pops up as a result of natural variation. One was imported into Florida in 1954 from Java. There are others and probably been around for many years. So you see they predate modern laboratory techniques. Without natural genetic variants, much of the crops around the world would just not be here.
If you planted lots of guava seedlings together you wouldnt know if one was potentially seedless as pollenation from others would cause it to set some seeds. If you find a good seedless guava you may need to cull out other guavas from the neighbourhood to get the seedless fruit.

Squirrels, weasels, skunks ... plenty, just not the furry kind. Those pollies can strip an orchard of its guavas in an instant.

There are many pests for guava, that's why the farmers spray them a lot in Thailand.
My tree suffered from root eating nematodes and when it had fruit the fruitfly always put eggs in them.
I even bagged them for a while but then they started rotting in the cotton growbag.
Finally i culled the pan si thong guava tree, it's easyier to buy them on the market.
