Unknown Fruit (forum)

elibyers7 starts with ...
Ok, this fruit (if thats what it is) grows near a rental house of ours in Upstate south carolina. It appears not be ripe yet, but we are still curious as to what the fruit might me. It is about the size of and apple and smells sort of like one. But it does have the rough shape of a tomato... the leaves on top are very stiff and it seems to be turning an orangish color. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

It might be astringent persimmon - wait until its bright orange and squishy and then sample it. Eating before this time and you may be extremely disappointed

I think it is a persimmon too. You can eat non astringent persimmons as soon as they are fully coloured but still firm and astringent persimmons need to be left until they are extremely soft and squishy at which point they are sweet and delicious. Can't tell by the picture which type it is.
