Hi Please see the attached pic the leaf on the left is last years growth and the one on the right is this years growth.
They are from a Wurtz avocado that I have growing in a wine barrel,I potted it up 18 months ago with organic potting mix and organic cow manure. Any ideas whats wrong with the leaves and how can I fix this please?

Avos are prone to Fe and Zn defiencies causing yellowing between the veins. If the terminal leaves are mottled then it is likely to be Zn defiency and Zn is usually applied with Mn.Fe defiency is hard to correct but a micronutrient mix applied lighly to soil and humus added can help.Foliar sprays are not well absorbed by avos.Waterlogging can bring the symptoms.Heavy mulch well away from the trunk can only make the tree go better.

Growing in pots is whole different ball game to in-ground Mikey Mike - suggest you google [growing avocados in pots]

Some folk on the Forum don't seem to appreciate the difference between in-ground and container growing...? :)

If in doubt - go for seasol/seaweed in the interim.

How young is the leaf on the right? are you sure its not lighter because its younger. i know mine take a little while to become fully developed mature leaves. if not i think the best thing would be like Amanda said, seasol and a few handfuls of fertilizer containing minerals.

The leaf on the right would be about 3 or 4 months old.
I also put mulch on it and the mulch was from when tree cutters put the tree limbs in a machine and it turns it into little chips, I was wondering if this mulch may be pulling the nitrogen out of the soil as it is breaking down, some of the trees surface roots look like they are growing in the broken down mulch.

Wood chips do pull out nitrogen but low nitrogen in avos usually leads to general yellowing and smaller leaves.Mulch in 'pots' doesn't usually work. The third element deficiency that cause yellow between the leaves is Mg, so you go to other symptoms but it doesn't matter in a barrel as you'll have to liquid feed as Amanda advised. There could be a low ph that has led to a few nutrient problems and changing potting mix is the safest solution for that.

Better to do just a little like liquid feed than do too much.If it is going in the ground it will come good then.It si probably not that important which nutrients it is showing signs of deficiency if you're going to liquid feed.

e bought a box of soluble trace elements today from Bunnings it contains S, Ca, Mg, Mn, Fe, Cu,Zn,B, & Mo. So I'll give this a go and also feed it with some soluble liquid feed.
