White Grub (forum)

Hey Guys,
I just dug over one of my vegetable patches and I discovered quite a few White Grubs as shown in the picture.
I had Capsicum and EggPlant growing in that patch and I had a shocking crop, really quite Pathetic the plants were small and next to no fruit and were contintally Wilty despite the soil being damp.
I assumed I might have some sort of Nematode problem but it looks like I have some grub issue.
Has anyone come across this grub before?
Would it be responsible for eating the roots?
How do I treat the problem?
Thanks

These are the larva of the African black beetle, and do a lot of damage. I would guess they chewed through the roots of your capsicum etc.
I personally wouldn't use chemical controls on a veggie garden. I've heard you can flood the area with water to make them come to the surface, then pick them out.
Or cover the surface with old hessian, carpet etc, where they will gather underneath - you can then pick them off.
You could just dig over the area and see how many you can pick out.
There is a nematode control which works on these pests, but probably only available in large quantities - it is used on golf courses.
Good luck!
