Jakfruit is a handsome evergreen tree, reaching a height of 8-15 metres and bearing the worlds largest fruit. Fruits can weigh up to 20kg. Strong scent to fruit skin, but it is deliciously sweet, with tropical flavours of banana and mango. It can be eaten fresh or dried. Very quick growing and usually starts fruiting in 4th year. A perfect start to a Food Forest in subtropical and even protected warm temperate regions, especially in spring and summer. Cincturing can help earlier fruiting.There is an old Sri Lankan proverb that says, with Jakfruit and coconut in your backyard you will never starve. This is because every part of the Jakfruit tree is useful. Unripe Jakfruit can be cooked with chicken, fish and eggs, and ripe ones can be eaten as is, or processed into drinks, jam, jelly or candy. The same applies to other parts of the tree such as the skin, leaves, flowers, wood and latex which have their own uses and benefits.

Acerola - Florida Sweet

This bright red cherry like fruit has varying tastes during different stages as it ripens. When fully ripe the fruit is juicy and aromatic with its acid content giving it a sweet acid apple-like flavour. The tree can produce a number or crops each year, making for quite a long harvest season. Our selection is called the acerola Florida Sweet Cherry and is a pleasant eating variety that is not too sour. The acerola is well suited to pot culture where it can be kept to a smaller size. It could also be grown this way in cooler climates where it can be moved to a warmer position in the winter. A word of warning the foliage of the plant is covered in tiny irritating stinging hairs that can produce an allergic reaction. When pruning your trees wear a long sleeved shirt and a pair of gloves.

Myoga Ginger

a native of Japan where it is grown commercially for its delicious spring shoots and young flower buds produced in autumn. Myoga flower buds are used in soups, tempura, pickled and as a spice. Like most gingers it is an understory of forests and so grows best under some shade. It can get sunburned leaves which will reduce its vigor if grown in full sun. In winter the top growth dies back and it regenerates in spring from the underground rhizomes.

Compact and bushy, perfect for pots with round fruit flattened on the bottom. Look similar to a small apple. Pick when the whole fruit (or at least 80%) has just turned brownish red. Texture is crisp and light we consider it an excellent fresh or dried variety. Fruit size 35-45mm. Developed at the Chico institute in California, this is an early fruiting variety. Panama Berry

A highly ornamental tree that bears small red berries within its first year. Blossoming and producing all year round, the flowers are white and followed by small red fruit that is sweet with the taste of caramel. The trees are exceptionally attractive with long spreading branches that often droop down to the ground and soft weeping foliage. Trees are very fast growing and drought hardy once established. They can grow 5-10m in ideal conditions but respond well to being cut back so it is possible to keep them smaller than this making it easier to browse on the tempting little fruits. Panama berries will happily grow and fruit in large containers provided they have a good quality mix and a healthy layer of organic mulch to hold the moisture in. It is the ideal backyard tree if you have children as it is a lovely little shade tree as well as producing tempting little sweet treats. Used fresh or in jams.Weed Warning: Panama Berry is regarded as an environmental weed in northern Queensland and on Christmas Island.

Angel Peaches are shaped like donuts and there is something very heavenly about the flavour. They are a very sweet yellow fleshed freestone variety, which is more soft and juicy in texture compared to standard peaches. Angel's will crop in warm subtropical climates. A PBR selection of the popular Pinks Mammoth variety. It has a low seed count and excellent natural fruit set. This means that, unlike some other varieties, there is no need to laboriously hand pollinate each bloom to achieve a good harvest. Unpruned custard apples grow into very large trees. With dedicated, twice yearly pruning it is possible to restrict tree height and spread to 3-4m. Highly ornamental tree and the source of cinnamon spice. The beautiful red new growth is highly distinctive. The spice itself is the inner bark that is peeled from the branches after 2 years. Scrape the outer bark, then peel the inner bark, leave for a day so that the inner bark curls into cinnamon sticks as it dries. They are distinctive in the many layered quill they produce that, when crushed, will shard rather than snap. Cinnamon is a very elegant and useful aromatic, much kinder to the palate than other spices. It imparts a distinctively sweet flavour when used. The leaves themselves are higher in clove oil than cinnamaldehyde, the active component of the sweet aromatic scent of cinnamon. Weed Warning: Can be invasive in tropical areas

Dwarf Mulberry - Majestic

Very low chill tree for the subtropics. The fruits of this mulberry are large and juicy with a good balance of sweetness and tartness. Prune your tree after fruiting to keep under 3mtrs, and to encourage multiply cropping throughout the summer. It is best to pick the fruit when ripe, as it doesn't ripen further off the tree. Fruit ripens over time, giving an extended harvest of delicious fruit. When not devoured fresh it is ideal to use in jams, wines and mulberry pies. Remember it makes a wonderful temporary dye for children faces and hands! (Dwarf Mulberry Tree Video ) Preferable to plant in the subtropics as in temperate regions, flowering is too early and yields are subsequently affected.

Pluot Plum - Black Adder

Graham Richards kindly gave us this low chill Pluot Plum to trial from his low chill breeding program. First fruiting this season, excellent flavour and texture. A Pluot is a cross between an Apricot and Plum- however more Plum characteristics are present. The Black Adder has Purplish- black skin with an amber flesh turning a deeper colour when very ripe. Pluots normally require cross pollination to set fruit. Try cross pollinating with another Pluot or a Japanese Plum variety- like a Mariposa. We are currently assesing its ability to self pollinate and will update our growing advice with those results. Ensure adequate sunlight, free draining fertile soil for maximum yields and healthy productive trees. Being low chill, it will produce fruit where winters are mild but may still not thrive in areas with hot summers. Protection may be beneficial.

Californian selection with large fruit and uniquely irregular apple shape. The large fruit has a very good flavour, and the shape compared to that of a Qld blue pumpkin! A very vigorous tree with moderate spines and good fruit production. Jujubes are crisp when green with apple/date flavours. Well suited to the hot and dry conditions of inland Australia.
