Native to China, the Yuzu has been used and cultivated in this region for thousands of years. The fruit is tart, resembling a grapefruit with mandarin overtones. It is rarely eaten as a fresh fruit but is used to makes sauces, preserves and a popular yuzu vinegar. In Korea thinly sliced fruits are combined with sugar and honey to make a thick marmalade like syrup. Yuzu kosho is a spicy Japanese sauce made from green or ripe yellow yuzu zest, chillis and salt. The yuzu is more cold tolerant than most other citrus, being able to tolerate to -5 degrees

Lychee - No Mai Chi

One of the most prized and desired varieties in the world and the leading variety in China. Large red fruits with small seeds, they have clean, dry fruits that are excellent for drying. The trees are harder to grow than other varieties and can be frustratingly slow but with extra care and nurturing they are well worth the effort for the quality of their fruits. Better suited to areas with cool winters. Late season.

Dwarf Orange - Cara Cara

This variety was discovered in Venezuela in 1976. It is smaller than many other navel selections but has pink flesh similar to Star Ruby grapefruit. In South Africa it matures slightly earlier than Washington navel. Although Cara Cara has yet to be evaluated fully under Australian conditions there is considerable interest in it locally. The dwarf rootstock, flying dragon modifies the top growth making this a dwarf plant that is ideal to use planted out or as a pot specimen.

Susceptible to stress from high temperatures, performs well in NSW and cooler regions. Needs extra fertilizer to compensate for its early cropping ability. Can be susceptible to wind damage.

Lemongrass

Lemongrass is one of the most versatile of herbs. It makes a delicious herbal tea, is often used in cooking, as an effective pest repellent and an almost impenetrable weed barrier. Tie the outer leaves in a loop and cook with food to impart flavour. Be sure to remove before serving. Incredibly fast to become established and drought tolerant. The fleshy, purple part of the stem is used in curry pastes and can be ground into a paste and added to marinades and sauces to impart a fresh, lemony flavour.
