It has deep green foliage that starts low on the smooth clumps which turn yellow as they are exposed to sunlight. Both the timber and the shoots are popular for construction and human consumption purposes. To ensure the safe consumption of bamboo shoots, it's important to boil them before use. This process helps to remove the cyanogenic glycosides produced by the plant as a defence against herbivores.
