Henna plant is the source of dye used for colouring hair, skin, fingernails and fabrics. A tall, scented flowering shrub that grows best in monsoonal tropical areas. In cooler regions it is best to grow it in a pot as the plant does not survive temperatures below 5 degrees. It is native to northern Africa, Asia, and northern Australia, in semi-arid zones and tropical areas. It produces the most dye when grown in temperatures between 35 and 45 C (95 and 113 F). The leaves gradually yellow and fall during prolonged dry or cool intervals. It does not thrive where minimum temperatures are below 11 C. Prefers moist, humus rich soil.
