Gac
Momordica cochinchinensis
A perennial melon noted for its orange-red flesh, native to SE Asia. The aril around the seeds is a deep brilliant red, high in the carotenes lycopene and betacarotene. Traditionally, it is much esteemed as a superfood and is cooked in a variety of ways... Read More to enhance flavour. It can be made into both sweet and savoury dishes. Green fruits can also be cooked as a vegetable. Vines are either male or female so both are required for the plants to set fruit. Unusually, Gac vines may change between being male and female and may change from one season to the next. Hand pollinating allows for a better crop. They are a very vigorous vine and require yearly pruning to suit the trellis built for it. Suited to subtropical climates, but can be grown outside of this range with care. Will lose its leaves for the winter in a cool climate. In tropical areas its vigorous habit needs care.
