A north Qld native, this large rainforest tree has a spreading crown of large leaves. The brown fruit envelopes the highly nutritious nuts that are delicious roasted. Commonly used in Indonesian dishes, curry pastes and as a meat tenderiser. The nuts should not be eaten raw as the toxin in the oil can induce nausea and vomiting. The early settlers found that the high oil content of the nuts enabled them to burn with a smoky flame for up to 20 minutes.
