Red Cedar

1. Repotted into 12 inch pots for a month steadily increasing sunlight exposure over this time. 2. Planted out into virgin soil, staked and watered twice a week then left alone. 3. Need to keep a close eye out for cedar tip moth infestation. Seem to be very active with some plants and warm humid weather. 4. Plants now 50 % taller and doing well. 5. In my case Plants that are in part shade seem to do better than full sun.

Red Cedar

Forest stocks of this beautiful tree were utterly decimated by settlers seeking good timber for construction and furniture. No-one bothered to replant them. I am determined to do my bit for restoring them into protected forests and gardens.

Red Cedar

Plant seedling in a 6m high thicket, give special care. Mine grew 6 m (& still only 70mm diameter.) Gradually remove competition. I now have them 10m high, 400mm dia. beautiful trees, no tipmoth.

Toona ciliata - Red Cedar

Try enclosing the tip in stocking mesh (panty hose) until the top gets too high to reach by ladder. After that, when the mesh finally perishes, the tree may be vulnerable. But at least it won't fork close to the ground.

Toona ciliata - Red Cedar

There is a moth that attcks the Red Cedar's new growth- which forses the tree to fork. This makes them unsuitable to try and grow as a forestry tree for the purpose of harvesting the timber. They need to be grown under the canopy of larger tree's.
