a beginner growing jackfruit (forum)

I live in Brisbane. I'm thinking about growing a jackfruit tree in our front yard (sloping, facing west), which receives afternoon sun and it's very strong in summer. Will it survive the strong sun and grow well?
I'm also concerned that the roots might be destructive. How far from the house should it be planted?

Jakfruit grows pretty well in most conditions in brisbane. Western sun should not harm it too much. They're pretty tough. I wouldnt plant it too close to a house. Its not as bad as some of its relatives, but it grows quickly and strongly and the roots do the same, so within 3-4m of house and you might be looking at some problems. I have around 100 seedlings that have just popped up, if you want one let me know...

They grow big, and they love the sun.
ours faces towards the sun like a sun flower does, its in a Norwest aspect.
They make a great shade tree but remember a falling fruit, If your under it is like a bag of cement falling on you.
You can get grafted. ours is a Tweed Crisp from Tropical Fruit World not too far from you.

It is about 9-10m of the house. When has the tree become mature enough for hard pruning?

Once it reaches the height you want , cut out tip , it should just keep on growing out the side branches then . I weigh my down to keep parallel with the ground .
Fruit is formed on main trunk and thick branches so keep small stuff thinned off.

Jakfruit will grow much smaller than usual if pruned for it starting from young. Of coarse it helps to have it in a restricted root zone. Its harder to do it if you have heaps of good soil. It will just wanna grow really big.I have seen 3 meter tall jakfruits bearing fruit. Grafted probably.
