What used to be Rheedia is now Garcinia and many of us have eaten achachas which are known as achachairus in south America. We have talked about these in past threads. There are lots of other good species and many people in Australia have seedlings of these.
The big guns are,
Luc's mexican
Madrono especially de monte variety
G.macrophylla
G.magnifolia
G.gardneriana
G.sp bicuda
G.acuminata

Also notable are G.brasiliensis and G.intermedia.

The picture is of Garcinia sp. bicuda which like achacha is an undescribed species.I have 3 of these species growing as modest sized seedlings now.

I've just put my name down with Luc for some of his 'legendary' garcininas, due in our autumn from US.
I don't know much about these guys other than achachas and another I've seen described as a more cold ahrdy mangosteen, the madrono but not sure of the variety.Beautiful foliage...

madrono isn't a very good garcinia, big seed and not as good as achachairu.

The sweet fuzzy skinned madrono might be at least up with achachairu but not the standard madrono.Luc's Mexican has the reputation of being the biggest and the best of the American Garcinia.G.gardneriana is held in high regard by many with an attractive fruit and it is a heavy bearer.
