Any one got indigo Bunga telang? clitorea? (forum)

My grandma used to cook a dessert using glutinous rice and an egg/coconut jam when we were kids. She used dried indigo blue pea flowers to colour the rice and it would become marbled blue. I know this conjures up a wierd mental picture for a dessert but it was scrumptious!
Anyhow, to get back to the point, I think the flower is clitorea ternatea. I managed to get one plant and it actually grew and flowered profusely here in the south. But it is WHITE. Sigh......
Does anyone know if I have a mutant? Will the seeds from this plant produce baby plants with deep indigo flowers or should I ditch the seeds and try to find another plant?

Hi David,
I have grown a plant with the same function with the one you mentioned. We boil the leaves and the puple colour juice is used to colour sticky rice and cake. It can be very deep puple if you boil lots of leaves. It has been used in Asian countries for many centuries.

Wow Tran! Never ever heard of that plant. Will try it though. Does it have a scent also or does it only colour? I hope I can get the seeds through Australian Customs. Thanks for the lead.

Hi David,
It does not have scent and the only colour I know. I have never checked for seed but it is very easy to grow from cuttings. If you are interested I can sending you some cuttings.

Can you eat it just by itself?
Maybe could you mix it into a drink?
1 more question!, does it need heat to make the colour?

Hi Juz,
I only know a method where you boil a bout a handful of leaves and stems for 10 minutes and queeze the juice out and use to cook rice or mix to flour. I am not sure if you can eat it raw. I think you can use the boiled juice to make a drink if you like. So it does need heat to make colour.

Hello Tran,
I'd love to try the cuttings! I'll go look up conditons it needs to grow. I guess it's subtropical.
I can't find any pakalana vine in australia. But if you'd like I'll exchange some seed from my Clitorea ternatea. It grows fast when it is warm but I don't know if you need to soak the seed before it shoots. If you get any blue ones, tell me!

Hi David,
Does this plant dies down in winter? What do you feed it to produce lots of flower?
The flower can be dried and the dye can be produced by pouring hot water over it. I love to eat that sweet too.

Yes it dies away completely in winter. In Shepparton, my two plants died and never came back but it had a lot of seed pods and so I planted the seeds and some have grown. Now I have to wait and see if they are blue or not. They are about 40 cm tall now but I planted them in October 2008. I guess they might do better in Melbourne as you don't get the cold we get here.

Blue pea...mine grew quite easily so I think it will grow in Melbourne if you start it off with warmth under the pot.
