cranswick starts with ...
Hello, l have a mature Apricot tree with about 10 baby apricot trees growing around it nearby, l assume the baby apricot trees grew from seeds in fruit fallen off the tree. l was wondering if l were to dig up the baby apricot trees and plant them somehwere else will they grow into successful fruiting trees, l think l read somewhere apricot trees grown from seeds are no good and sterile, it that true or not

I guess it depends on whether the original apricot is grafted or seed-grown. I had a seedling come up near my Newcastle Early apricot, and the fruit looked like a cherry plum.
Cherry plum stock was often used for stone fruit, possibly not now.
It comes down to whether you are prepared to water and feed them to find out. Water in WA is too expensive for me to take that kind of gamble, but your situation may be different.

Cranwick there are wild self sown apricot trees around here that are delicious and there is much competition from the locals to get the crop. If you have the room and you are sure they are not root suckers from the original tree but genuine seedlings I'd give them a go.
Julie , this probably sounds duhhh but are you sure it was a seedling and not a sucker from the rootstock. I have had suckers come up near quite a few fruit trees (it's those enthusiastic little tractors, my chooks scratching away that damage some surface roots.)

If you plant ten I'll bet 8 turn out good, oddly Apricots do take a while to fruit from seed though. Seems to be an 8 year trip or so for me. Oddly being because peaches fruit from seed within a few years. That's assuming they are apricot seedlings sand not cherry plum suckers.on the other hand cherry plum suckers and a quick graft from your tree will have you a tree the same as the original anyway and Apricots are very easy to graft.
PS Jantina that fire must have been uncomfortably close to your place?

Jantina, I still haven't dug it out, so I don't know. I have been here 20+ years, and the trees were already fairly old. I do get lots of sprouts below the graft, but it has never suckered away from the tree before.

Indeed Jason, close enough to smell the smoke, never pleasant. I trust all is going well for you and Annie? Give her a hug for me please.
Julie I think cherry plums are very prone to suckering (here anyway) it's probably something to do with them being such tough little survivors.

Jantina, I was IN the smoke all afternoon Sunday and it was ages away from me. Yes Annie's good, 15 weeks, everything looks normal so far and good blood results for the 11 week chromosome test. So the baby seems spot on, just need to get it growing some more now :). As for me whos chromosomes maybe not so good :p.. I've been referred to an immune system specialist in Melbourne for more testing to try and figure out the mysterious Jason problems. I am feeling well, best I've ever felt actually but its only with drug help so far:) but at least I have now felt how awesome it feels to be a normal human, huuuge difference to my 40 years of suffering lol, oh well I didn't know any different so it doesn't matter much.
My trees are doing pretty good considering its dry and no fertiliser this year.

Hope your trees, you and yours remain well, Jason. I'm also thinking of those in or near fire.
Hurray for drugs, Jason. Those of us who are dependant on it love it and loath it. :( Yes, 'normal' is a miraculous state of being; a state of grace.
