Just found a Maqui Berry at the B in Geelong. only $11.95 so very stoked today. It is frost tender whilst young so will have to provide protection for a while but we don't always have frosts so fingers crossed.
One question is : Is it self fertile or do I need a pollinator?
Cheers Sue

Hi Sue - i researched and you need a Male & Female plant to get fruit - you would have to buy a few to have any chance of getting both and a fair wait to find out. Is stupid they dont say on tag.

Most Bunnings stores in Melbourne stock Maquis. I got 3 plants since you need both male and female and they are about two years old but none of them have flowered yet.
Unfortunately there is no way that I am aware of to tell if they are male or female. Just worry that they might all be males but you could increase the odds if you had say 5 plants. Would be intersted to know how long they take to mature.

Thanks Markmelb. Will need to watch for a grafted known sex then I guess. They only had two there in stock and no indication that it needed a pollinator or of sex.Darn it - and I was so happy. LOL Oh well nice shade tree maybe?

I am on the lookout for a second Maqui as my first has done little since I planted it in 2016.I am sure it needs a 'friend'. It is now about 1 mt high and wide but doing nothing but grow slowly. Maybe a better site in more sun needed? It is in partial shade as I read it was forest fringe dweller that liked acid soil....maybe not?
