Hi All, We are getting close to moving into the new house and looking in the garden at what to take with us.
We have this little bunch of Avocado trees which have come up in the kids herb patch - through neglect - out of the compost soil.
Should we bother transplanting them to the new site? I have heard that Avo's grown this way never fruit?

Yes although they do take a long time to bear, many seedlings either grow very large or very tall, making them commercially useless. However, all the varieties in the market today started off as chance seedlings - you may get something interesting down the track if you're patient.

I have a seedling that I planted about 7 years ago, and it flowered for the first time a few weeks ago. Unfortunately we have had some very gusty winds and the few fruit it had set, have fallen off. It's going to be such a thrill when I do get some fruit, as I have no idea what the seedling was or what the avocados will taste like.....will be a real surprise. Besides, they make lovely shade trees, even if I never get any fruit.

Hi paula-f,
To help your seedling avocado tree bear, give it some of this brew:
2 parts dynamic lifter plus (or blood & bone plus etc), 1 part sulphate of potash, 1 part epsom salts,

Thanks for that info Brendan. I think all my avocados need a really good feed, and hopefully with some rain on the way in the next few days, (after nearly 3 months without any) I'll be able to give them the mixture you recommended. I have read quite a few times that they like boron and calcium (gypsum), but have never been sure up to now of how much to actually give them.....now I know.
