Avocado tree losing leaves (forum)

My avocado tree has leaves browning at the end and then the leaves are rapidly falling from the tree. We live quite near the beach with sandy soil - could it be saline water causing the problem and how do I fix it? Last year all the buds fell from the tree and we didn't get one avocado. Help!

I hate to be negative, but your poor avocado will never be really happy so near the coast. The salt winds will burn the leaves and it will struggle to survive. Even in the tropics they do best in the cooler hills.
Gardening near the beach can be tough anyway, but trying to grow tropical trees is a big ask. If you really want to push the boundaries, you need to set up a shelter belt first, growing trees and shrubs that will protect the later plantings.

It probably is from salt and over application of Chloride containing fertilisers can have the same effect.By the way avocadoes (Guatemalans) are not really tropical as the do best poleward of latitude 23.Rich humic soil and frequent flushing can help the trees.

You are right Mike, they are not really tropical, but they do love moisture. They grow well where I live, in the hills outside Perth. It gets pretty cold at night in winter, but we do have good soil.
