Avocado (forum)

Avocado is only available here as an imported fruit, with perhaps a few trees in Islamabad. I am always trying to grow some from seeds, however they never come to much more than potted house-plants.
This one is an exception! It's grown 3ft in as many months. Now over 10 ft tall in less than two years.
However it's leaf type doesn't register with anything I can find online or in books. It could be from the Congo (some seeds arrived from there 17 months ago).
I'm sure its an Avocado because I have at least one more displaying the same serrated leaf margins.
Does anyone recognize this leaf type on an Avocado?

Hi Chalmers,
Don't quite know what you mean when you say 'some seeds arrived (from the congo) 17 months ago' ?
Did someone import avo seeds, or were they inside an avocado fruit, from the congo?
Doesn't look like an avocado tree to me, BUT, it could be.
I'd let it grow and see what happens :-)

It doesnt look like an avocado to me but it could be some sort of a variety that we dont have in australia
Whats the climate like where you live? is your soil free draining? i presume you live in india so the humidity could be causing fungal infections on your seedlings.
I have been able to grow avocados quite easily from the seeds of store bought avocados however when they are young they can be sensitive especially to light and wind but as long as they are in good soil and you take care of them they grow quite quickly.

I have two tree seedlings displaying this rough leaf with serrated margins. I had a number of Avocado fruits in from the Congo plus a few other fruit seeds two years ago. Its just possible that there are two other plants growing amongst my Avocado's, the form was so similar I didn't notice the variation till they were bigger. I will wait and see!

Climate is variable from winter nights near zero to 50C days pre-monsoon followed by several months of extreme rainfall and extreme humidity. Neem, Sapota, Ficus Spp., Citrus, Papaya, Guava and Mangoes do very well, amongst much else. Soil is an immensely deep alluvial silt, a single brick-type red clay, which drains surprisingly freely.I also grow all store bought Avocado seeds, they never amount to much more than small potted plants however.

The Avocado seeds came in Avocado fruits, a large light green, smoother skinned variety. There were a few other fruit seeds in the batch and its just possible the plant is from one of them. The form however is very like my other Avocado's, all small and potted.

PS - I think u are either very confused about the origin of your seed - or - you having a lend of us, personally :)
