Hi all, I have a one of these vines from Bunnings but it's producing bright yellow perfectly round fruit? It's labelled "P.cinnabarina" - the pulp is yellow and majorly tart (none of my p'fruit are sour like this) I have panama reds n yellows nearby and N.Kelly blacks. Can this spp cross and produce something like this? Or - another maybe I have another Bunnings "switch"? None of my other types have produced anything different.
(sorry - no camera for a pic)
PS - yes they are ripe..

Amanda,
Is the skin soft and slightly furry, or is the skin hard and leathery like a normal passion fruit?
I used to have a very 'round' banana passionfruit growing at a house I lived in when I was in the Eastern States. It was a bit tart, but still rather tasty.

Hi BJ..it's a perfect passionfruit - pity about the sour.. very hard, dense shell and very heavy with pulp for it's size. It has classic passionfruit leaves and a distinct red colour on the stem and new leaves. The flavour is good but as I like sour stuff - it must be pretty sour to me even!?
It may be a great plant to cross pollinate with...it's a tough, vigorous vine (a seedling). The flowers smell just like cinnamon, quite strong. I wonder if I could cross it with a sweeter one panama gold..??

Hi Sandy,
Sounds like your passionfruit has too much nitrogen. Try giving it some sulphate of potash, seasol and spray the vine with liquid potash.
Some old cow manure and plenty of mulch, plus some gypsum, will help too.

Hi, I have a Big Red Passionfruit vine still in the pot after 1 or 2 years. I live on the coast in far northern Perth on limestone and lime sand- no soil, very hot and very windy, before I transplant it in early spring 1)is it worth planting or should I buy a different variety? No fruit yet but reading these blogs 2)are all Big Red Passionfruit sour? 3)If planting how should I improve the "soil"? Have had successful unknown varieties in the past facing east and west. 4)Does anyone know if the producers "Western Australia's Growers Group" have a web site? Thankyou for any help.

Hi Robyn...I have heard practically nothing about "Big Red" in last few years...I think snottiegobble had one. Mine was the dud "yellow" - apparantly it's just a common "Qld Red"..
You would be far, far better off with a Sunshine Special - which was bred specifically for WA and is a ripper - I know smeone who gets bucket loads of fruit even down in Albany..
I highly recommend it.
Passionfruit love lots of organic matter and have a shallow but wide/searching root system - so lots of compost and a good mulch are really important - out to 3m radius (increasing as the vine gets bigger..)
As long as the vine gets plenty of direct sun then it should fruit well for you..
Too much nitrogen (once the vine big enough to start fruiting/cropping) may inhibit flowering...but - the vine is a big beast and does need regular/slow release low N food (like compost/manure)and lots of water...
Don't know about any growers group tho..the folks at the nursery where u bought the vine will able to tell u where they got it from - and you can ring them to find out tho...

Crikey SG - maybe get rid of it?! My 2 sunshine specials flowering already and only been planted 5 months!?
Strange isn't it tho - as my Big Red/yellow was smothered in it's useless fruit from less than 1yr old...
Not very good plant breeding is it..
I see Bunno's has a new variety called Norfolk pride or something..and Big Boppa still around (and I still haven't heard anything about that one either..)
