Black and brown areas on mango plant leaves (forum)

Hi everyone,

I have bought a grafted mango plant and it is in a pot. Recently have noticed black and brown areas on the leaves. No sign of any pests on the plant. It has been 3 months since we bought it and there has been no new leaves or shoots. Not sure if this is the old leaves getting brown gradually or has any disease.
Any advice please ( first time planting mango plant).

Hi apk,

If you bought it 3 months ago then it is winter time in SA. Mango is tropical fruit tree thus there will be no growth until October when the weather gets warmer. When the plant is young, less than a year old don't apply any fertilizer as it will burn the leaves (black&brown marks) as seen.
Also, Some mango CVs can withstand cold temperature well below 5c i.e. Bowen, Palmer, Kensington, Florigon, Kwan, R2E2 etc. However, Nam Doc Mai, Valencia Pride etc. does not like temp when it drops below 5c and the plant will suffer a lot or may die. So you need to find out what is your mango variety. Cheers

Hi abk,

Flushing water will not help and it may cause root rot during the winter time and may release extra fertilizer to the root system. If you grow it in a pot then take it out, remove the new soil around the root ball as much you can but don't break the old root ball. Dip it in a bucket of water for few minutes. Repot it with a new potting mix. Keep it warms inside for a few weeks. Cheers
