Black Brazilian Cherry (forum)

I have just bought a grafted Brazilian Cherry, Black Beauty, from Daley's. Can anybody please tell me when to expect the plant to flower and fruit?

Here's the sad news-- it's not grafted . I've had mine 3 years and it is slowly growing ; no fruit yet.

SRT, Im not 100% certain, but I think the new ones are grafted. The earlier lots were not and were half the price. I mulched mine as it performed so badly. But these new ones are supposed to be the real deal.

My red seedling has been producing much sweeter fruit than my FF grafted black recently.
I read somewhere on here that if the tree lacks water the fruit's sugars are more concentrated.
The FF Black gets a daily watering, and has a mouth puckering taste, where the red seedling gets rainfall only and is covered in beautiful sweet fruit.

It's not the sweetness that is at fault ; it is the aromatic overtones --read tastes like petrol.

If it is Pitanga (Eugenia uniflora) what you have, they flower and fruit in about two years when germinated from seed. Excellent for juice,jam and ice cream.

Yes it is a grafted black pitanga. I have two reds grown by seed and they are over two years old and haven't fruited yet. John Mc you sent me two black seedlings that are growing well. Interesting what you said about the black taste. Maybe you have another black type not black beauty. Thanks for the info everybody.

In the USA the name brasilian cherry is used for Eugenia brasiliensis, and Surinam cherry for E. uniflora. It avoids the name brasilian for two different fruits. I use the yankee names in NZ but have to use aussie names on the forum. A further glitch is that there is a plant called Eugenia pitanga which means pitanga shouldnt be used as a name for the E. uniflora. There must have been some sloppy naming of these plants early on in aussieland.

Good question John as mine feel off in its first fruiting season.The fruits wee almost full size but seedless.The one I lashed out and sampled was like sour dry apricot but a fully mature ripened fruit will be different.
