Black Sapote - edge of leaves going black (forum)

6 responses

Benson starts with ...
New seedling - recently transplanted (1 mth) in well drained soil, 500m from coast, lots of sun, on drip irrigation system - leaves (especially new growth) turning black on edges and dying. NB: We had very strong southerlies recently.

Any suggestions for treatment would be much appreciated.

Thanks. Ben

It seems you have two plants with similar symptoms. Check the soil pH and ,is it possible that your soil is contaminated by salt or some other chemical? Edge of leaf burn is often due to salinity.

Thanks for feedback.

It's been quite hot, and I live near the coast - sandy soil will have a lot of salt. So could be either of those. What PH do they like?

pH of 6 to 7 best but I read they can cope with more alkaline soils if mineral deficiencies are rectified.

Hi! I just came across your post. I am worried. My black sapote is presenting the same symptoms, I also live in the coast, in front of the ocean. Any solutions? I also found that some leafs look as I they had been munched and found a little guy walking around... Any idea what he is and if he is actually eating my plant?
Any help would work :)

Thanks.7

I live in Melbourne and recently purchased a Black Sapote, at first the tree was fine but after about 3 weeks the leaves started to drop off and stems turner black.
I’m worried that the tree will die.
I have kept an eye on the temperature here and have made a note of its exposure to cold weather now we are heading into winter.
If I keep my tree inside over winter will I have a chance to save the tree?
