Black Sapote Sex at Bunnings (forum)

Hello, thanks for taking the time to read this.
Recently I brought a two Black Sapote trees from Bunnings. Pretty sure the are seedlings and are about 1 meter high.
I plan on planting them in the ground soon, but at the moment have moved them to large pots to grow.
I didn't know too much other than they are nicknamed Chocolate Pudding Fruit and even though they don't taste chocolaty to me, they are still really yummy!
So while researching how to best care for my trees, I have learnt there are male and female sapotes that need to be cross pollinated. I have no idea if mine are male, female or hermaphrodite. The plant tag doesn't say anything about the sex or cross pollination, only that they will fruit and how to care for them.

I'm ringing Bunnings to clarify when they are next opening, but just wondering if anyone else is familiar with Bunnings Black Sapotes?

Thank you.

If you have two you will get fruit. Chances of getting a non fruiting (male only) BS is slim. To get two would be extremely unlikely. Many will only put out male flowers for a few years, then put out both male and female flowers when the tree is more mature. The same is true of some other species. Grafted ones are best, but seedlings should produce alright fruit.

Hi Fruity Tooty,

I got this tip from a tropical fruit world tasting and it seems to be right- if you eat the black sapote with fat (cream or ice cream), it tastes much more like chocolate. If you eat it on its own it tastes like persimmon.

Do seedlings come close to their parents? My friends gave me a delicious fruit and I managed to raise a seedling - I wonder if it would ever fruit in Sydney.

whatever your black sapote problems are mary, If it makes you feel any better, mine are probably worse. My Bernicker hates me and everything I've ever done to try and make it happy. Plan on buying another one when they become available, think I have a dud.

Well I have read through the long thread about them and there seems to be a large number of people having trouble with it so I presume it's going to be difficult, especially in Sydney. Still I will do my best and see what happens. It is only tiny at the moment. It might not turn out to be like its parent either, even if it survives. They are dear friends who gave the fruit to me to try for the first time.

Hi all,

Mine is seed grown (unknown variety) and hasn't cropped either. It is only two metres high though. I have heard that they like a _lot_ of water, someone said theirs went crazy after being flooded. Mine has also ony grown during periods of very high rainfall.

I keep it under the verandah facing north and away from frost. Not sure how it got pollinated but its not crossed with the ricks late as there aren't even leaves on the plant let alone flowers?
