Greetings green fingered everywhere.

We live south of Cooktown on the coast road on the northern edge of the rainforest. Have an eight yo Black Sapote that has never born fruit but has luxurient growth.
It has recently flowered and yet again none have set. When is the best time to graft this tree in this area ??

Thanks

I have often read that the Black Sapote is dioecious (needing a male and a female tree) but have seen plenty of isolated trees bearing heavily all the same. Most of the named varieties seem to have self-fertile qualities, maybe add a second tree or graft a branch onto your existing plant. They air-layer quite easily, I imagine now growth is taking off would be a good time to do it.

Thanks for the advice.
A friend has a good bearing tree. I will try a marcot and see if it works. Have done that before in NNSW on a ficus roxburghii which worked well. I have room to plant another nearby and will graft a branch onto mine as well.
Very dry here - no rain so am irrigating every night.
Thanks again.

I also spotted "rooter pots" at the GardenExpress website which make airlayering quite simple.. can't wait for my order to arrive now.

I have had limited success with black sapote grafts in the past. I'm currently wrapping the whole scion with floral tape to minimise moisture loss during the graft healing process. It looks like I might have at least one success out of four this time round. Bit early to tell. I got hold of some "Tahiti" scion wood recently, really hoping it will take. This technique works wonders with avocado, nearly 100%.

Do you think avocadoes could be air layered?
