I recently bought a Nebal avocado tree from my local nursery. The leaves have started to turn brown and I am not sure why. I thought it was too much sun, so I put a net to prevent the tree from receiving too much sunlight. I’m not sure that was correct, please help.

That's because of too much sunshine, you'd better to put a flowerpot or more in front of it. I grow radishes and snow peas in those pots, avocado trees look okay.
Oh, you are in United States, I was wondering why someone needs to worry about sunshine in Down-Under.
Wear masks, you are in California.

Hi madieRose4167,
There are many reasons to cause the brown leaves for young Avocado listed as below:
1. excess salt but it does not look like in your case
2. Hot sun. you need to cover with shade cloth and keep the soil moist but not wet
3. leaf burn due to excessive fertilizer applications.
4. dry wind and cold
You need to check it out the above suggestion to find out the cause. Cheers

David gives an excellent summary of the possible causes. Given you seem to have the plant sun covered, you should see the burn stop, if that's the cause.
Fertiliser burn usually looks blacker than that, but it could be happening.
Given that you're in CA, I would suspect the hot dry winds and super low humidity and dry heat are hurting it. Make sure it is well mulched and gets watered daily, but moderately (avocados hate too much water as much as they hate too little).
