Canarina canariensis (forum)

Linton starts with ...
The amazing Purple coloured stems of some baby Canarina plants (see pictures)which come only from the Canary Islands.
The thing about this species is that they are not to be watered in Summer. They flower and fruit in winter but become dormant during Summer so you must not water them then. But that's what you want, it's good to have plants that don't need water in Summer!
They have good fruit too, about walnut sized with delicious sweet flavour so I'm looking forward to trying them next Winter.

That's a very pretty thing Linton, with the added bonus of edible fruit. Not good for warmer climates like mine unfortunately.

Canarina can fruit in Pot!
Hi Lissa, yes it's best grown in cool temperate climates. The link you put has some good pictures of the flowers. They also come in other colours like orange and yellow.
Now I've read that it can easily be grown in a pot against a fence and it will produce fig-like fruit. Cheers!

Canarinas still going strong!
They're supposed to die off over Summer but these ones are still growing slowly. The tubers are developing also and becoming larger. They should produce a crop next Winter.

Recently a yellow flowering Canarina canariensis was found in the North of Gran Canaria by bushwalkers.
Unfortunately the report is in German but you can see the pictures of the stunning flowers!

I'm also wondering how it's fruit will compare with the other varieties.

Canarinas - First Winter Flowers now!
The first flowers have come out and it looks like there are red and orange varieties. It's nice to have some flowers at this time of the year when not much else is out and they are just like the ones pictured on the websites.
However the best is still to come when the sweet figlike fruits should follow. There's not many plants that will give fruit in less than 12 months of planting so I hope they're going to taste good.
To be continued when the fruits arrive........

Canarina canariensis having fruits now!
The plants are loaded with these strange fruits so it looks like I'll get to try some this season. Not sure how to tell when they are ripe but guess that they will be ready when they turn yellow like most other fruit???
