Canna Lily (forum)

krazykangaroo starts with ...
I have just finnished eating my canna lily rhizomes for the year and found out that most people don't realise that these plants were grown for their rhizomes originally and not the flowers and they are very edible.

They are getting a bit stringy now that they are starting to flower but they taste great in the spring when they are juicy, tasting just like sweet artichokes. Just wash, peel and cut into chunks then roast or microwave.

Now Queensland Arrowroot is a canna and a few other similar, are all canna edible though, it was my understanding that they where not. or is it that some might just taste better/worse or have higher/lower oxalic acid ?

Any experts here?

For those interested My QLD Arrowroot has grown easily from seed for over east if anyone want arrowroot but cant get the plant due to location etc.

When I tried mine, they were very tough and stringy....very disappointing. They need an awful lot of cooking time too compared to other veggies.
The bits in between the strings tasted good though. I think my problem was that I tried them just as they started to flower.
