Gevuina avellana (Chilean hazel, avellano chileno - does anyone know if the plant is sold in Australia?
Phoenix sells the seeds, but apparently they need 7 years to fruit and that's a long wait.
I haven't tasted them yet but it seems to be an adaptive nut.

I have two in the ground!!! Very frost hardy and can grow in sun or shade. The flowers look just like a white Grevillea. My two plants are only young and have not set nuts yet. I doubt its sold in australia but it is around!!! Drop me a line if you have no luck and i'll see if i can strike some cuttings for you!!!

wow frost hardy that's exactly what we need here!
If I don't find it I could still get seeds, Phoenix sells them. I wonder why that is not commonly sold at nurseries.

Hi ringelstrumpf I phoned Bundara the same morning you did, just after you'd called them.
They explained they didn't sell the trees any more.
And Phoenix seeds are hard to contact, so I was wondering, if you have any spare Gevuina avellana seeds after you receive them, I'd love to do a swap or buy some from you.
Cheers! Violet

No problem, Ringel - I have now asked for their seed list and will order when I receive it. If my seeds germinate and I end up with some spares, I will send you a seedling.

Jantina I've never tried it but my gardens looking pretty good, you better come around soon next time you are heading in this direction, Leeches keep jumping at me from the Avocado trees :S that's got to be a pretty wet Summer when that happens. I did some Sapote grafts a month or so ago so you can see how I've done it, I did 4 and they all took pretty easy. Even grafted a Cherimoya and that took too, I've not been able to do Cherimoya's previously but the new tape seems to have made the difference. I wonder if the Chilean nut would grow in loam or if it needs sand. I have a total of two? or three nuts on my Macadamia tree :P I know it's not many but it only had one flower and it's a start

Hi Jason, I was just thinking about coming over to see the garden this morning. Will ring or email you tomorrow. As for the Gevuina Avellena, what I've read indicates it's pretty adaptable and grows from cuttings as well as seed so it's just a matter of time until I can give you some. Apparently it's a relative of the macadamia. Say hello to Annie for me.

Thanks allybanana, I got 3 packs too but only one up so far, still it's looking strong and now has 4 leaves. I read that they easily succumb to fungus so have watered it with chamomile tea which is supposed to be antifungal. Fingers crossed we all get them germinated.

About two months ago a bandicote?? Dug my chilean hazel out of the ground, it was only a few feet high. The leaves had curled up and were dried out, so i did a few root cuttings. I just put them in a large plastic pot with some potting mix. There is now a few shoots coming up.

George I don't have a Chilean Hazel, but one day I can try this experiment with Jantina. But isn't a Macadamia the better nut anyway? I'm not sure there's any actual advantage to having the Chilean one?

Bummer! Well I still only have one germinated although it has 7 leaves now and looks very healthy.Eventually I may be able to supply you with cuttings or seeds. I thought perhaps it was a bit hot in my glasshouse for them to germinate but rereading S. Lyles instructions she says use bottom heat so that can't be the problem. I'm tempted to tip one out of the pot to see if the seed has rotted or not. Seed marches to the beat of it's own drum I've decided, I still have some lucuma seed that has sent down a taproot but nothing up the top and has been like that for a year (it just crossed my mind that maybe a slug ate the top part).
Jason the nut may not be superior to the macadamia (although all reports say it is a high quality nut) but I work on the theory that there will always be some crop failures so the wider the variety I grow the more likely I won't have to go to the shops to buy my food.

Jantina, It's a good theory, I must be getting fussy now that I'm running out of room, I used to just plant anything that would grow :) but I do have a few Macadamias that still need to go in the ground, I'm not even sure where to put those.

Hey that reminds me I think those cuttings are going to go, at least they still have green leaves and looking good so far. P.S my mum says that flower show is on tomorrow and Sunday if you happen to be driving around, but I wont be here because I'm going to that Geelong tournament

Thanks micarle.
Jason, reading Susanna Lyle, she says they contain less fats than macadamias but may be considered superior in terms of oil type and their levels of antioxidants. About 45% monosaturated fats. She also says the oil is good for sunscreen. And the nuts are easy to shell, so all in all a good nut to grow.
