They look like animal scat, don't they? Well it's supposed to grow into yam. Not sure if I should plant them now that we're going into winter? Didn't think of that when I bought it :)

Heya Mary I hope all is going well.I would call your tubers chinese yams, the most cold tolerant of all yams.It is good to see your planting tubers are under 1m long.I reckon toss them in the dirt and don't overwater.I have some D.esculenta in the fridge and hope to have some purple fleshed water yams in hand soon.I plan to share them with jujube.

Thanks, Mike; I hope they will be ok over winter. I am growing them for their medicinal properties. We Chinese call them Mountain Medicine or Poor Man's Ginseng. Often put into soup with goji berries. The leaves are edible too. :)

Jujube they may be lost then because even pony express should not take that long.I squeezed quite a bit into small envelopes and that could be the problem.Mary is it the tubers that you eat?

Yes, Mike. The tuber can be eaten fresh like potatoes or dried and use as medicine. Leaves can also be used like sweet potato leaves.

Mike, would these yams grow down here? The sweet potatoes certainly do & the more I dig them the more I regard them as yams!

SG the purple yam D.alata probably no,the lesser yam D.esculenta probably,D.batatas definately and the air yam D.bulbifera yes but it is of lower quality. You could always try the more tasty types of sweet potato with creamy purple and the yellow flesh kinds.

My SPs are off white flesh with a pinky purple skin & very dog like!! Just dug it up! :-) OMG I cannot believe it, & I swear I never touched it apart from digging it up & washing it!It is 2&3/4kls ! C,mon Amanda beat that with a labradoodle!!!

SG on closer examination the 'turds' have white bits sprouting from them already so I doubt if it would be allowed in WA. I have put them in dirt as Mike suggested and see if they'll grow for me. Hopefully I'll find a way to get some to you in the future.

Thanks everyone.I am now really intrigued by yams, but I found out ocas refuse to grow in the ground past Xmas even in the shade, yet I have 2 lovely plants in pots also kept in the shade over summer.
This makes me think that summer ground temperature alone kills them off here!

Well howdy David, yes it is and I am just scratching in the kitchen for something to try my camera on.It is a small type and taste like...wait a minute......It is a good tasting one alright, more rockmelon than pumpkin with definate mango overtones. There is less flesh than some big ones. You don't know anyone after their seeds do you?

Rambais amanda and those ones are about 25g each. The passionfruit is a from a seedling line of mixed up yellows. That one was very sweet and musky and a bit bigger and more elongate than a panama.

The passionfruit wasn't from my yard and I actually prefer the more orange pulped passionfruit.Rambais are easten like jabiticabas by biting the skin sucking out the contents and swallowing seeds and all. Some prefer to spit the seeds out.The taste is hard to describe but maybe soft longkong....hang on....lychee and jabotica in a citrussy kinda way. These ones are goos alright and its a pity that my bananas and paw paws are all ripe as well.I don't know why I get queazy in the tummy every market day evening.

lol Mike...I am feeling the same! Just worked my way thru that bowl of p/fruit - they darkened up nicely and just started to crinkle - perfect time to eat a purple...
Funny how panamas are the opposite and best when firm shell...?
Does anyone eat those P.cinnabarinas? I never see or here about them? Someone once called them a QLD purple..?

Brendan you are right and I am a slow learner. The sun is blazing out the front but has lit up the back yet.I will race out there in maybe 15 minutes to take some snaps.
Oh yeah the yams. The top right one is clearly esculenta but the bell shaped one on the left is pretending to be alata but has pale flesh.

Hi Mike, here's how I reduce photos.
Click on My Pictures (that is where all your photos should be:).
Right click on the photo you want to reduce, drag pointer to Open With...., click on Paint.
Click on Image, then Stretch/Skew. (You'll see the number 100 in blue)
Type in 20, hit the Tab key, type in 20 again, hit the OK button.
Hit the red exit button top right, when they ask Save Changes etc, click Yes.
That's it, you've now reduced that photo :-)
If it reduces too much, change the 20 to 30.
Hope that makes sense.

Brendan I have a Mac and what I do is click on the photo then click email; it gives you a choice of small medium or large. I choose medium and it creates an email with the photo in medium size; I then drag that photo to the Forum where it says Pictures: Choose File.

Nick those shallots are meant for greens and the nutty bulbs. Some folk continually trim the tops as needed and this is at the expense of bulb size.
