I just potted this lane late orange tree a week ago but noticed that the leaves are curling more and more. Is it because of lack of water? I water twice a week and make sure the water comes out from pot hole...

Hi MathewT,

Your Orange tree wants more water yes or no. I suggest you checking the soil moisture first to confirm whether it is the case. If you are not sure how to check, especially at the depth. Buy the soil meter which helps to identify whether soil is wet or dry. There is another easy way by putting a large tray filled up with the water under the pot. You still water your tree as normal and this tray of water acts both ways.
1. like a reservoir when ever the tree needs extra water
2. If the tray always full indicates you overwatering the pot.
Note: soil meter call 3 in 1 or 4 in 1 Soil tester, which measures PH, moisture, temp, and light. PH and Mosture are most important parameters to ensure the plant grows healthy in the pots.. Cheers

Hi Matt

Can't see anything wrong with your citrus. There's no leaf discoloration and pest or diseases. The only possible explanation is inadequate water. Try mulching around the tree but avoid touching the trunk to curtail excessive water evaporation. The soil should always remain moist but not waterlogged. Always monitor it by feeling the soil.

Happy gardening :-)

Thanks David and Fruitylicious1 for your advice! I watered 2 times a week because I read that citrus loves infrequent watering so 2 times would be enough. I may try to water 3 times a week instead of 2, excess water will come out anyway. I don't have enough space to put another large try under pot...

Last week it was very windy (over 40 km/h) and it shed a few leaves. Will build a wind shield to cover it.

Actually, a new shoot (on the leftmost branch in photo) is already growing on 1 of its 4 short branches. Hope it will grow to similar length of 2 other longer branches before winter. Then I will need advice to prune or not.

Hi Matt

Normally, citrus are pruned during winter or early spring after harvest just before bud break to remove dead or ill positioned branches. Don't over prune though because the leaves are the main manufacturers of plant food

Happy gardening :-)

Thanks Fruitylicious1! I won't prune it for now. Waiting to see more shoots to come out. So far just 1...
