Currant Bushes (forum)

Hi guys i have just bought two currant bushes - one red and one white from tass1 . Anyone know best growing medium,conditions, and whether pots are ok?

shade, moisture and a cool spot as the nurseries in Tassie reckon it's too hot and dry for best growth there !!

Hello,
I'm interested in purchasing some red currants too... But I am unsure of the chill hour requirements. The internet suggest chill hours between 300 and 1200. Does anyone know what chill hours red currants require and if they will crop in Perth?

Umm, probably not. They need around 1200 minimum, Perth gets 300 if we are lucky.

That's what I thought (that Perth's 300-350 chill hours would be less than the 800-1200 required). Mean Bunnings! ... I saw them for sale there and I thought ... maybe, just maybe, I was wrong about the chill hour requirements and that I could grow them here!
Maybe I'll have to opt for a peach pixie, or natal plum!

Hi BJ - they even sell those currant bushes up here!? The guys who work in Bunnings tell me they get a set "menu" of plants shipped to them - regardless of the area.

The classic for me was a huge load of fuschias drooping away on the centre display in the hot easterly...yup..can just see them growing well here..?!

Don't know about natal plum Joey - but TASS1 has Kei apples which would to the job - the thorns are formidable! Sounds like the fruit ok too.

Without thinking abt chill hour requirement, yesterday I bought black currant plant and now I'm reading that they need cooler winter to fruit so may not be suitable in Brisbane.. Looks like I wasted money but still like to know if anyone has tried growing Black currant bush in Brisbane, can they fruit here?

I have a big bush of natal plum so can recommend it. It grow well, beautiful foliage and with a bit of watering looks very nice.
