You should get most of them to have germinated by three weeks or so, but a small amount may take several months. There's more detail on a Google search if you look at Davidson's Plum Recovery (NSW) - seed biology chapter may help. Phil.

I cut open the two which I dug up and found the seed inside dry and shiny - looking good and not wet or dry rotted. They're replanted, so we'll see how that goes.

Thanks also for the lead on the NSW document - will review.

The jam or jelly made with these things is probably equal to the best. The addition of sugar seems to make up for the initial sour taste and transforms an umpromising fruit into a much sought after end product. I imagine it would go well with game meats too.

Genius, Jimmy! This evening I slipped out of the soil the seeds I snipped a couple days ago, and VOILA - they're sprouting. Put them gently back into the soil; and, tomorrow when it's light again, I'll snip all the rest to get them going.

Cracking the husk was the deal.

We have none on this side of the world to taste, so I have no idea what to expect after Jason's and M Nash's reviews. Still, it's a seriously interesting tree.

Yeh, I know Phil. They would make a kick arse jam. And I am trying to grow a yellow mangosteen.
I suppose it cant be all beer and skittles, We have to work on some things to get there best.

I planted three yellow mangosteen today (Garcinia sp?) from which a Qld forum member sent seed some months ago. Hope they are as good fresh as they are when made into jam!

We also planted three lemondrop mangosteen (Rheedia intermedia, Rheedia edulis - I think it must be the same as the yellow you mentioned, Phil - is it?) a week ago. They were from fruits we had the opportunity to taste at a tropical fruit nursery. They had two tastes: first bite is sweet and juicy as the pulp bursts out through the taunt skin - very mellow - good aftertaste - reminded me of lychee with softer texture. Then the skin is more acidic, near lemon or tangerine flavor but milder. After taste lingers a bit longer. The best part is that it was steamy hot day; and the fruit, though it had been in full sun, was refreshing - not like when you eat an orange off the branch on a hot day. The grower told us that the seeds lose viability exceptionally quickly - like within a few days - and need to be planted ASAP.
I didn't get around to it until a couple days later, so we'll see how it goes.

I'm seriously addicted to Davidson plum jam. There's nothing like it. We have one huge tree, but unfortunately it only produces a small amount of fruit, on one of the lateral branches, although there are always heaps of flowers on the main trunk - but they never turn into anything. Don't know why that is!
