Distressed! Dog chopped off my grape vine. (forum)

Hi all, I have this Carolina black rose grape vine from Daleys growing very well on the ground. Last month after coming back from Lakes entrance found one of the two leader branches broken. We thought it was the strong winds.

This morning, I found the other one broken as well. I felt really distressed realising that my dog was the culprit and now I am not sure if the remaining will grow new branches. Can anyone advise from the picture? Thanks!

Sounds like you need to put up some sort of protection like chicken wire. You are lucky that at this time of year grape vines are going into dormancy. Just trim the broken ends into a neat slant so the weather doesnt get in & your vine should send out new shoots in the spring. You will probably need to rub off a few so that your vine will be back to 2 main stems. If you are growing it onto a fence than one main stem for next year & keep an off shoot near tho top so the vine will form a T shape just as wineries grow them.

Yes i need some protection. Did not expect my dog to do pruning of this sort. I have cut off the rough edges with a secateurs. I hope it will not die.

Hi Au0rey,

The same thing happened to my grape when it was young and the dog was also a puppy (the vine was about 2m long, in it's first year). It recovered completely. I have read that grapes are one of the plants listed as 'poisonous to dogs' but I suppose the puppy did not swallow the vine, just chewed it off.

Diana.

Hi Snottiegobble and Diana, good news! My Carolina black rose survived despite looking like a forked twig in the ground! It has four new buds!

I did not have much hope and did not fertilise it in winter. Finding it alive is like finding gold! Is it too late to do fertilising? Diana, what do you give to your carolina black rose for fertiliser? I remember you have one if I didnt recall wrongly. :)
